THE LECTURES
Virgil O. Strickler delivered a lecture on Christian Science before a large audience in the church edifice March 12. He was introduced by Prof. Victor T. Wilson, who said:—
Christian Science has brought peace, happiness, and health to many thousands of people throughout the civilized world; yea, to many thousands in our country alone, and in many instances it has brought these blessings when all other means that were tried had failed. There are many other thousands who are deeply interested, but are not enrolled church-members, who are in sympathy with the cause and receiving benefit from it spiritually and physically, and there is a constant and substantial growth in numbers everywhere. As a consequence, Christian Science is a potent factor in the religious world today, and there is promise that in the future it will exert an untold influence for good upon all religious orders as well as upon the civic life of the people. It stands as an exponent of the revival of spiritual life.
Yet, notwithstanding all that Christian Science is today and promises to be to those who will but look, it is not appreciated or understood by the world at large. Very few, indeed, aside from those who have accepted it in whole or in part, know for what this comparatively new faith stands. Sometimes those who have understood it least are those who have openly attacked the cause and misconstrued the motives of its adherents; those who would go even so far as to deny its adherents, if possible, the liberty of religious worship and practice which is the inalienable right of every citizen under our constitution. Such as these have failed to understand not only the faith, but the handwriting on the wall. The truth cannot be crushed. Such as these make charges in their antagonism that are completely unsupported by the facts. No sect, founded upon the teachings of Jesus Christ, has been represented by a more peaceful, loving, religiously uplifting and law-abiding people.—Correspondence.
