In the fall of 1896 I was taken ill with what a physician...

In the fall of 1896 I was taken ill with what a physician pronounced an acute stomach affection. He gave me medicine, and I thought I was cured. In a short time, however, the trouble came back, but though the doctor again prescribed for me, the remedy gave me only temporary relief. This went on for some time, and at each recurrence the disease was more troublesome and difficult to expel, and the attacks were of longer duration. I finally had to diet, and frequent vomiting, with hemorrhage, caused me to be in constant dread of everything I ate or drank. At length I became so thin and weak that I could scarcely attend to my business. Then I grew despondent, having lost all hope of being well again.

One Sunday, being alone, a stranger in a strange town (my family was in another state), I decided to take a short walk. It was very cold and the ground covered with snow, but as I strolled back to the hotel I passed a beautiful cottage, with mountains in the background, and I tried to persuade myself that I could enjoy the scenery. I thought how those who lived there must enjoy their evenings, not knowing that in this very home I was to receive the greatest blessing which could ever come to one—freedom from the fear of sickness and sin through the everlasting Truth revealed in Christian Science.

That evening, while sitting by the fire in the lobby of the hotel, the pain was so severe that I thought I should certainly die if I did not get relief quickly; so I asked a gentleman sitting near to direct me to the best doctor in the town. He gave me the names of two or three, but added in a brotherly way, "How would you like to try Christian Science?" I replied that I would try anything. We put on our overcoats, and he took me to the very cottage I had admired that afternoon. How cozy and peaceful it seemed to me when we were admitted. A small party of ladies were eating a cold lunch, and I thought if I should eat like that, it would kill me. On being introduced to the practitioner, I stated my condition and desire. She gave me a treatment, and told me to come again the following evening. I asked her what I should eat, and she told me to eat anything I desired, and to have no fear in doing so. I had some uneasiness about it, but thought I would test the rule. I ate heartily of substantial food, and was greatly surprised to find that I had not the slightest symptom of pain or distress. That night was the first in a long time that I had slept soundly and free from suffering. In four treatments I was perfectly well, and have remained so. Never before have I felt better than I do now, and the light is beginning to dawn on me in regard to what Jesus meant when he said, "Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink."
