Our clerical critic is probably not aware that Christian Scientists, as a Christian people, are doing as much in their way to preserve the health of mankind and to overcome discord and disease of every name and nature as are members of other denominations. In his arraignment of Christian Science this minister evidently is not aware of the fact that Christian Scientists consistently depend upon the promises of healing through the power of God which are given in the Scriptures. If this be "modern hocus pocus exorcism" then the practical example of Jesus Christ and his disciples in their healing of the sick comes under this head, for Christian Science in its healing activity is identical with that of the great Master.

Christian Scientists have absolute faith that God's promises are operative at all times, and that when Jesus said, "Whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive," he meant exactly what he said. The psalmist states, "Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling." Christian Scientists have proved that purity of thought results in purity of action, includes absolute cleanliness, includes conditions of confidence, and expectancy of good, those conditions which are conducive to the highest and best results morally, physically, and spiritually, and their constant endeavor is to inculcate within the thought of humanity that faith and confidence in God which is sufficient protection to those who have it.

Christian Scientists are fully entitled to be known as such. In the first instance, they are Christians, which means that their constant endeavor is to be like Christ, to do good to all mankind, and to preach and practise the doctrine of God's unchanging love for mankind. They are Scientists because they intelligently understand the scientific relation of God to man; because they have "exact knowledge coordinated and systematized," by reason of which they obtain satisfactory results; therefore the term Christian Scientists, as applied to these people, is not a misnomer, but is entirely appropriate.
