In the fall of 1894, when I first came to know of Christian Science...
In the fall of 1894, when I first came to know of Christian Science, I was in a very serious condition from an acute attack of lung trouble. I had been under the care of one of our best physicians for three months, but had received on benefit whatever, when a friend came to see me and loaned me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." I read a few pages that day, and was so much better that I discharged the doctor the next day, and the following day I was able to get up and dress. I felt that I had been healed by reading this book, and at the same time the desire for intoxicating liquors left me entirely. I have not had any desire for stimulants from that day to this, for which I am very thankful; and it all came without a single treatment, just by reading Mrs. Eddy's book. Even before I had much understanding of what I was reading, I began to improve, gaining greatly in weight in the first three weeks.
Seven years ago I was taken with a very severe attack of an eruptive disease, which my friends prophesied I would have every year afterward, but by the understanding of the truth it was completely destroyed in nine days. I was only confined to the house because of appearances. About three years later I was attacked with a very severe pain and some alarming symptoms. My wife telephoned to a Christian Science practitioner, who came and gave me treatment, remaining about two hours. I went to bed and also to sleep, and I slept all night. The next morning I passed gravel-stone twice, but without any pain, and that was the last of the trouble. I had only the one treatment for this disease, and I think the healing was truly a wonderful work. Later, the same faithful practitioner brought me out of a very severe attack of lung trouble. For all this betterment I am very thankful to God, and also to our dear Leader.
