I am deeply grateful for this opportunity to tell...
I am deeply grateful for this opportunity to tell every one who reads this testimony, how through Christian Science I have been lifted almost from the grave. I am now thirty-five years of age, and for fifteen years I was entirely controlled by the desire for strong drink. I tried various medicines that were guaranteed to cure drunkenness. I tried everything I could think of or any one could tell me, but to no avail. My friends told me I should use will-power, and I did the best I knew how; until I began to think God was unjust, knowing how hard I was trying to get out from under the control of liquor, and that He would not help me. I was about to leave my home and wife, because I did not want to disgrace them any longer,—preferring death, as I thought there was no hope for me,—when a lady advised me to try Christian Science treatment.
I had no faith in anything, but as a last resort, when all hope was gone, and hardly caring what happened, I went to a practitioner. I was a little under the influence of liquor at the time, but after the third or fourth treatment I was absolutely healed of the appetite for strong drink. I have been in perfect health ever since and am one of the happiest men in the world. I had been a church member since I was a little child, but through the habit of drink had dropped out of it. My wife used to do everything possible to interest me in good and beautiful things, especially flowers, but I could see no beauty in them. Since I have come into Science I love flowers,—have my home filled with them,—and it seems as if I could hardly get enough of them.
I am very grateful to Mrs. Eddy for giving us "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and grateful to God for the understanding which has made my life new and which enables me to send out only thoughts that will help to uplift others.—Jesse Martin, Lexington, Ky.
