It is with a deep sense of gratitude to God, and to our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, that I write of the great help Christian Science has been to my family and to me. In August, 1909, we went to the coast for a few weeks in camp, and our preparations for the trip were very different from what they formerly were. I had been a druggist for a long time, and formerly we used to take many kinds of medicine with us; but now we took none, and did not need any. Reaching the ocean late in the afternoon, the children went in bathing the next morning, being in the surf bright and early. Our baby, who was not quite two years of age, was with the others nearly all day, without a hat or bonnet, and when night came on he was badly sunburned. He fretted and cried, but was given treatment in Christian Science, and slept peacefully all night. The next morning there was not a trace of the sunburn. He was perfectly healed, and was not affected by the sun again while at the beach.
On the last day of our return trip, when we stopped for our noon meal, one of the mules kicked me in the forehead and temple, the shoe cutting two long gashes in my forehead. I fell unconscious into the arms of my son, and when after a few moments I regained consciousness he was doing his utmost to stop the flow of blood with his handkerchief and was repeating alod the scientific statement of being as given on page 468 of our text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. Instead of calling to his mother or the other children who were near, he turned instantly to God, who is ever present to help. (Let me say right here that our Sunday Schools to good work.) Soon the pain was entirely gone; the boy's understanding of the power of God had done the work. We walked to our wagon, and I reassured my wife, telling her not to be afraid. She, however, insisted that we go to a surgeon and have the wounds sewed up, as the appearance was very alarming and she feared there would be scars. But I said, "No, we can do the work ourselves." One of my sons pressed the edges of the cuts together, while my wife put several pieces of court-plaster over them, and meanwhile all were declaring the truth for me.
I did not suffer one twinge of pain, nor have I since. In fifteen or twenty minutes we were eating our luncheon as though nothing had happened. That afternoon, when we reached home, I telephoned to a practitioner about the accident, and asked for some absent help. Then I helped to unpack the wagon and did my share of the night's work. Next day I did a hard day's work, then came to the Wednesday evening meeting as usual, and gave a testimony of the healing, in Science, of one of my sons, of rupture. The following Sunday I taught a class in Sunday School and acted as usher in church. Three or four members of our church who met me said afterward, when the accident was mentioned to them, that they had seen me and talked to me, but saw no trace of the accident. As a matter of fact, the injury was perfectly healed in less than a week, and is leaving no scar.
