I am sending a thanksgiving offering in the form of a testimony for the Sentinel. I have felt for some time that I wanted to express the gratitude which I feel for what Christian Science has done for me. I came into the understanding of this truth five years ago, through my healing of an abdominal growth. I had had three attacks of illness, but not until the third attack did I know how serious was the condition. While in New York city the attending physician was a specialist on diseases of this sort, and he told me I had a fibroid tumor, and that an operation would be necessary. In just a year from that time I had another attack, which was so severe that at times my life was almost despaired of. The physician said that if I recovered I ought to have an operation as soon as I was strong enough.
Just before leaving home for the city where I expected to have the operation performed. I heard of Christian Science. I immediately accepted it and felt as if it was an answer to prayer. I went to this city and called on a practitioner, who assured me that I could be healed. I commenced treatment and was completely healed in a short time. Since then many diseases have been overcome, and I wish to tell of one special demonstration of the truth. I ran a piece of steel into my eye with such force that it seemed as if my eye was destroyed, but as quickly as thought itself I denied the error and declared the allness of divine power. I walked the floor, holding my hand over the eye, affirming over and over again the power of Truth. I had no pain at all, though the eye swelled a good deal: but, aside from that, I had no discomfort. I telegraphed to a practitioner for help about an hour after this happened, but she told me afterward that the work was done when I so quickly turned to Truth. This happened on Tuesday, and by Saturday there was nothing to show that the eye had ever been injured. For all this I am filled with praise to God, the giver of all good gifts, and especially for the understanding which enables us to prove that He is "a very present help in trouble."
Since that time, now five years ago, Christian Science has made progress in our community. We have a room for Wednesday evening services, and many are becoming interested and asking for help. Surely, as our Leader says, "the time for thinkers has come" (Science and Health, Pref. p. vii.). I wish to express the great appreciation and reverence which I have for Mrs. Eddy, that she has been able to show us the truth even as it was shown to her.
