Our critic's accusation that Christian Science is heresy...

Boulder (Col.) Herald

Our critic's accusation that Christian Science is heresy must be replied to as in the case of Paul when arraigned for a like misdemeanor: "But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets."

The Century Dictionary defines the word "heresy," when specifically used in theology, as "a doctrine rejected by the authorities of a church as contrary to the established creed of that church." Possibly our reverend critic refers to the doctrine of healing, which is an essential teaching and practice of Christian Science. If Christian Science is heresy because it fulfils the teachings of Jesus in regard to healing as well as preaching, then Christian Science must plead guilty to the accusation. Christian Science accepts all the teachings of the Saviour, and in all four Gospels his commands to heal the sick are invariably connected with his injunctions to preach the gospel. In fact, the greater part of his three years of ministry, as related by the apostles, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, is mainly a record of his healing works, which were in demonstration of the Principle he taught, a proof of his correct understanding of God.

Our critic's misinterpretation of what constitutes a Christian a follower of Christ, is no doubt the cause of his criticism that Christian Science is not Christian. The Christian Science text-book, Science and Health, shows very clearly that Christian Science is Christian because its healing works are of God,—Christ-healing, accomplished through the spiritual recognition of God's government.
