Christian Science did not at first come to me through the healing, but because it appealed to me as a religion, adequate to meet every need of mankind. Through a great sorrow I was led to seek its help, and I can truthfully say that its message is one full of joy and hope. To those who have been through great trials, it opens wide the door to peace, and blessings unnumbered are its fruits. My progress in the understanding and acceptance of this truth was very slow, but little by little I learned the powerlessness of evil and the omnipotence of God, good. It seemed very hard at first to give up all material remedies. In the case of my children, the doubts and fears were sometimes almost overwhelming, but as proof after proof of God's love and care came to me, I saw the nothingness of human beliefs and fears, and gained confidence. The period of changing or readjusting thought is not one of peace, and trials will continue until mortal mind gives up its arguments, doubts, and false beliefs, and we awaken to man's real selfhood, which is the reflection of divine Life, Truth, and Love.
My experience for four or five years after I became interested in Science was one of ups and downs, and it seemed as though I was constantly in need of help for myself or the children. It was not until I learned to love the truth for its own sake that my greatest freedom came, and now I know that trials and sufferings last so long as we need to be pushed along the way, so long as we forget that "growth is the eternal mandate of Mind" (Science and Health, p. 520). Loving the truth, seeking it by night and day, in sickness or in health, we need not suffer; the old fears vanish, and greater blessings than were ever dreamed of flow into our lives.
I am more than gratified that this movement has been blessed with a Leader endowed with the greatest courage and most unselfish love. Mrs. Eddy has indeed cleared the pathway for us all, and has shown us how we may obey the command of the Master to heal the sick and comfort the sorrowing. Those who have seen and experienced the fruits of Christian Science can best appreciate her work. For this continuous work, for the blessings it has made possible not only for myself but for all humanity, I shall be forever grateful.
