We cite our readers to the Christian Science text-book...

Greensburg (Ind.) Standard

We cite our readers to the Christian Science text-book, not as an interpretation of Scripture to be accepted by all without question or proof, but as being the only safe and authentic source of information on the subject of Christian Science, before judgment is essayed. Christian Scientists by no means ask the world to accept Mrs. Eddy's interpretation of the Bible, except upon the very wholesome basis of positive proof and legitimate appeal to reason.

The fact that in nineteen centuries of Christian history there have not been satisfying evidences of a full interpretation have not been satisfying evidences of a full interpretation of our Lord's life and teachings in the form of "sings following," would seem to indicate that our critic errs, moreover, in affirming that we need no further interpretation of the gospel. Indeed, the justification for the "visible church" today and in past ages is quite largely the fact that it affords such opportunity for interpretation of God's word. It is queer, also, that Mrs. Eddy's interpretation of the Bible should have been singled out by our critic from the thousands of interpretations extant, as the one sole and pernicious (?) violation of her own cherished idea of a church "whose only creed is the Bible." It would doubtless develop upon investigation that our critic's "creed" is, after all, only her own or some one else's interpretation of one or more of the salient points of Christian faith couched in Scriptural phraseology.
