THE GARMENTS OF BEAUTY

Long ago the psalmist prayed, "Let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us," and when one thinks how flawless is the divine nature he realizes how ideal this "beauty of the Lord" must be. Further, when he learns in Christian Science that this adornment of the Lord becomes his own as he apprehends the truth of being, he perceives how fittingly the Christian evangel was described in the prophet's words, "How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings of good, ... that saith unto Zion. Thy God reigneth!"

Christian Science teaches that all reality is no less harmonious and beautiful than true. This bases the possibility of art, against which there can be contention save in its departure from the spiritual ideal. True art appears only when men think God's thoughts after Him. Spiritual beauty like truth is infinite, it companions with omnipresence. God's universe is its inexhaustible storehouse. Its wealth adorns every creature of God's creating. Separated from the sense of materiality, the sunset and the starry night veritably "declare the glory of God."

The universality of spiritual beauty, its eternal freshness and its unfailing appearance in the faces of inspired men and women, leaves no question that it is an end in revelation and that it is inherent in every manifestation of Mind. Hence, rightly to divine and recognize the beautiful is to become responsive to the good. We become the children of God in loving both the beauty and the truth of Spirit, and we are thus to be saved from all awkwardness of expression and unideality of taste,—begin to live in harmony with that divine law which "is perfect."
