Christian Science does not deny the existence of man...

Riverside (Cal.) Press

Christian Science does not deny the existence of man and the universe, but maintains that these are not material as they seem to be, and its mission is to purify and spiritualize the consciousness of mankind, so that they may see things in their spiritual perfection as God sees them. Spiritual things are spiritually discerned.

Our critic cites quotations apart from their context, and thus a false impression is created. The Bible or any other book under such treatment could be made to appear inconsistent and ridiculous. When Mrs. Eddy makes the statement that man is incapable of sin, she plainly tells us that she is referring to the ideal man who is absolutely governed by God. The apostle John said, "Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin."

If our critic had carefully read the text-book of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," he would know that Mrs. Eddy deals with man as he seems to exist materially and also as he really exists spiritually, apart from all sin and sensuality. Spiritual man never dies, and is coexistent with God. Jesus said, "If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death."
