Our critic declares that the Christian Science text-book is absolutely irrefutable because it is utterly meaningless. This amounts to nothing more than the simple admission on his part that he has not comprehended the book. It is likewise an admission that he has failed to do what thousands of others have accomplished. In this country alone enough persons to make up a thousand congregations of reasonable size have understood the Christian Science textbook sufficiently to be healed of sin and sickness and to heal others thereby. As to the literary merits of the Christian Science text-book, we submit that one of the distinguishing features of any bit of literature is its effectiveness—what it does. The Christian Science text-book has accomplished much good in the world. It has lifted thousands of persons out of despair. This is evidence that Mrs. Eddy has stated her ideas in such a manner as to make them understood.

Christian Science is farther from pantheism than any other teaching. It is impossible to maintain a pantheistic belief on its premises. Christian Science has been practised for more than forty years, and it has been followed by beneficial results. Its record therefore has been the exact opposite of the record which our critic alleges is that of the Hindu philosophy. Hense his argument that the Hindu philosophy is based upon selfishness and knows no sympathy and no compassion, constitutes evidence that it is the exact opposite of Christian Science, since Christian Science generates the highest from of sympathy, compassion, and unselfishness.
