I first took up the study of Christian Science during the summer of 1907, and I am happy to say that in that short time I have learned more from its teachings of what life really is than in all my previous study. I came to Christian Science first of all for physical healing, and the results were such as left no doubt in my mind as to the truth of its teachings.

I had taken medicine for nearly thirty years for one disease alone; indeed the doctor had told me that same week that I could not possibly do without it, but I was healed of that particular ailment with one treatment in Christian Science. This in itself was sufficient to show me that there was something very grand and good about it and I determined to look into it for myself. That was in June, 1907, and in July I was laid up with an attack of bronchial trouble, which was met and overcome in a few days by absent treatment. I had been subject to this complaint for forty years, and had suffered tortures almost beyond endurance with material remedies, including blisters, etc. Let any one imagine the condition of the body after such treatment, and compare it with the quiet and prayerful treatment of Christian Science. Is it any wonder, after I had caught the tiniest glimpse of its beautiful teachings, that I was willing to accept a Christianity which treats every case of sickness so lovingly and overcomes it through the power of Truth.

In August I was seized with a sharp attack of illness, and my husband wanted to send for a doctor; but he waited one day, at my request, to see what absent treatment in Christian Science would do. I was then so much better that he no longer wished for medicine, and very soon I was about again. In September I had a wonderful experience. I went to visit my daughter in Durham and took with me a little granddaughter. When we had been there three weeks the little girl was taken so ill that no food would stay on her stomach. The second day it was beginning to look serious, for I could see that a liver trouble was quickly developing. I was very much upset at the turn her illness was taking, and though my experience in Christian Science was so limited that I dared not venture to apply it, yet I did not want to call a doctor. One of the neighbors suggested I should give the child some medicine, which I did with great reluctance. It all came back again, however, and I thanked God from my heart that it had done so, for I felt I had done wrong. I at once decided to do my utmost with my slight knowledge of Christian Science, and leave the rest to God; and I was well repaid. Sleep was out of the question for two nights, but I kept my thought steadfastly fixed on the work before me, placing all confidence in God, and on the fourth day the sickness ceased. On the fifth day we were able to take our journey home, nearly one hundred and fifty miles, without any inconvenience whatever. It was some few days before the skin became natural, but at the end of a week's time the child was eating heartily. This was a grand experience for me, and it gave me more courage to go on, for I knew that it was God working with me.
