For over three years I have been a student of Christian Science, and am now a firm believer in its teachings. I therefore wish to tell of some of the blessings that have come to me through this wonderful truth, for I have had many proofs of its power to heal. I had been a semi-invalid since a girl of sixteen, when I had a fall which I was told afterward was the cause of my ill health. I had a stomach trouble (from which I was never entirely free until I came into Science), and continued to grow worse until I had to decide between certain invalidism and an operation. I finally consented to the latter, but not until I had prayed over it and believed it was God's will. The woman physician under whose care I then was, was my dearest friend, and had done all that a skilled physician and devoted friend could do to find the remedy or cure for my condition. At times I was somewhat relieved, thanks to her love and faithfulness, but never well.
I went to a New York hospital and had an abdominal operation performed, which was practically four operations in one. For eight years I had had headache, and hoped the operation would at least relieve that, but it did not. The stomach trouble was relieved, but it returned at intervals afterward, and I was far from being a well woman. A year and a half after the operation I broke down again, and was ill in bed for nearly five months. The autumn following this year I tried osteopathy for six months. This did me no permanent good, and I gave it up on the advice of the osteopath, who said the treatment was too severe for me at that time. For the first time in the twenty-four years of ill health I was utterly discouraged, because I had everything to live for and a child who needed the care which I was not able to give him.
Another dear friend, who had taken care of me during my last illness, had a Christian Science friend in whom she had great confidence, and she urged me to allow the Scientist to come and talk with me. I refused at first, but finally consented, to please my friend. The Scientist came, and I was impressed with what she said, although I did not understand it. I was daily growing worse, so finally decided to be treated in Christian Science, but not until I had read Science and Health and felt quite sure of its spiritual teaching. I did not receive any marked help at first, but began to gain gradually, and one condition, which had baffled all the various physicians I had had, was relieved, and has continued to improve until I am now nearly free from it. I commenced to attend church as soon as I was able, and have been a regular attendant ever since. The Scientist who started me in this way was not a regular practitioner, but I was helped under her work and I can never forget the spiritual help and love she manifested to me.
