[Written for the Sentinel.]

PROTECTION AT NIGHT

We cannot be alone, for thou art near!
What though the midnight shadows close us round,
And terror seems to lurk in sight and sound:
Still are we safe, since thou, O Christ, art here!

We cannot be alone, though far be friends,
And all our rooms stand vacant now, and still:
Hush! beating heart, the quiet bodes no ill,
For at thy side is he, thy Friend of friends.

We need not be afraid: we dwell in light.
The lamp of Truth is lit within our walls,
And wheresoe'er its searching radiance falls,
Naught can be hidden: therefore, fear not night.

We cannot be alone. Our hand in thine,
In confidence we wait, and talk to thee,
Until upon our vision silently
There dawns the sense of day and Light divine.
