In denying the reality of "the ills which flesh is heir...

Rochdale Observer

In denying the reality of "the ills which flesh is heir to," let it be understood what Mrs. Eddy affirms, and then it will probably be appreciated why the denial is made. The affirmation that "God is good" and "God is all," means to those who accept this affirmation that all goodness and all power belong to God. From this it must follow that if He is all good, evil forms no part of His creation, and as sickness and disease cannot be classed as good, they must be evil, and hence not sent by God. "All the real is eternal" (Science and Health, p. 353), and since sickness and disease are not eternal, but only an experience belonging to the human senses, they are understood in Christian Science to be unreal. By declaring the allness of the Christ, Truth, and the falsity of the human senses, Christian Scientists are able to bring a cup of cold water in response to the agonizing appeals of suffering humanity. ...

It is futile to ask "why Christian Scientists eat and drink like other men." Christian Scientists are human and are subject to human experiences like the rest of mankind. They eat and drink just as others do, and as the Master did. They make no pretense to be better than other people, and only claim to be better morally, physically, and spiritually than they were before knowing and understanding Christian Science. They are striving to follow the Master's precept, "Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; ... for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things." ...

Christian Science and its Founder are willing to be judged by the test of the Master, "By their fruits ye shall know them." From all parts of the world where it is known Christian Science is giving proof by demonstration of the beneficence of its teaching in healing sin, sickness, and sorrows. ... The progress of each follower of Mrs. Eddy will be in proportion to his receptivity to the truth of being, and his loyalty to the Master's commands; but the Christ garment must not be divided; the sick must be healed, as well as the gospel preached to the sinner.
