At the birth of one of my children I had trouble with...
At the birth of one of my children I had trouble with one of my limbs, and was very ill, the doctor saying I would perhaps be in bed for months and that even then I might be a cripple for life. My husband went at once to look for a housekeeper, as I was a very sick woman indeed. A dear friend and neighbor, who had herself been healed and was studying Christian Science, came to see me, and asked if I would let her treat me. I had great love and respect for my friend, but had been warned by my minister's wife and others not to have anything to do with Christian Science, as it was of the devil. I, however, felt it would do no harm to try, so my friend treated me that night, and I arose next morning well. I was able to care for my children without the aid of a housekeeper, and have been well ever since. Although I am thankful for the physical healing, the spiritual uplifting and regeneration I have experienced is more than all else, for I am a new woman, born into the kingdom of divine Love.
I had a child about three years of age who had never walked, and it was said she never would,—that her limbs were too small for her body. As I had moved to a great distance from my dear Science friend, I wrote her for help. This was on a Monday, and the child was walking by Saturday. On another occasion my baby was very ill with bowel trouble. I wired for help and the child was healed at once. Our son, twelve years of age, was struck in the head with full force by a horse which was racing. He was picked up by a doctor, who at first thought the boy was dead, but later brought him home and laid him on a couch. I was not at home at the time, and no one thought the child would live until I got home. But, thanks be to Christian Science, he did live. I came in and spoke to him and he knew me at once. I turned to my husband and asked him to send a despatch to this same friend for help. The doctor called twice the next day, but did not give any medicine. The following morning he said, "I do not think there is any need of my calling again." The child continued to improve, sitting up on Friday, just four days after the accident, and on Sunday he was carried downstairs and ate dinner with the rest of us. On Monday morning he dressed himself and was out of doors almost all day. In a few more days he was playing with other boys. People said that if he lived he would always be foolish, but Christian Science broke every law of mortal mind, and he is just as strong and well, mentally and physically, as he ever was.
In the face of all this, what can I say when I think of God's love in giving to us our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, and of what she is doing for humanity. Is it any wonder that we feel like bowing our heads in silence and trying to make our lives express our gratitude by doing what she is teaching us to do through her example and that wonderful book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." God bless her, and may all the good that has been accomplished through her work reflect back with such light that no darkness can stand before it.
