When living in Riverside, Cal., on Thanksgiving day,...
When living in Riverside, Cal., on Thanksgiving day, 1905, my little daughter began to complain of her throat. After having treatment two days, the trouble did not seem to yield, and from the indications I decided it would be wise to call a physician to diagnose the case. I did so, with the result that he pronounced it a dreaded disease. He said the child seemed to be doing well, but to comply with the law it would be necessary to send for the health officer, which I told him we were quite willing and ready to do. In six days the little one was up and dressed; in fact, at the time the doctor came she was sitting up in bed playing. The day before we were to have the quarantine lifted, our son was taken with the same trouble. Our faith was put to a severe test in his case, as he seemed to be a very sick child for ten days, but through the faithful, loving help of a Christian Science practitioner we again realized the victory of Truth. Both children were pronounced well by the physician before the expiration of the time required for quarantine, but because of outside thought the doctor said the quarantine had better not be lifted. The absence of any friction or antagonism from the physician was most gratifying. A short time after the boy returned to school, he said he had some trouble with his eyes. I called the same practitioner, and she gave him six treatments, when the trouble was entirely overcome, proving that the asserted material laws of after-effects are powerless when God's law is seen to be in reality the only law governing His children. I feel most grateful for this experience. for while it seemed a severe trial at the time, it removed a fear that I believe had been latent in my thought for years, as I had been through an epidemic of this disease coming into Science, but I found that the truth, as demonstrated in Christian Science, is effectual in healing any and every disease. To our beloved Leader, who has given us the "Key" whereby we may gain the spiritual understanding which heals and saves, I wish to express my deepest love and gratitude.
