Three years ago, while living in Iowa, our little son,...
Three years ago, while living in Iowa, our little son, then just past four years old, was stricken with what the doctors called a dreaded spinal -disease. He was in a serious condition from the first, and suffered more than I could describe. The home physician gave us no hope at all. He held a consultation with a noted physician, but the verdict was the same, that nothing could save him, and all we could do was to make him as comfortable and happy as we could while he lived. We took him to a neighboring city and had him examined by a specialist in such diseases, but after five minutes' examination the specialist gravely shook his head and told us our boy could not possibly live over two months. The child had been sick about two weeks when I wrote to my mother, then living in Sacramento, Cal., asking her to come to us in our great trouble and grief. It was impossible for her to come at that time, but as she was very much interested in Christian Science, she took the letter to a Christian Science practitioner and had her treat our boy, knowing we were more than willing that she should do so.
The letter was taken to the practitioner on Monday evening, and the first treatment given on Tuesday morning. About the middle of the forenoon the little fellow jumped down from the couch where he had been lying, ran across the room, and began to play with his little sister, something he had not done before for two weeks. From that time on for several weeks he improved every day, and at the end of two months, instead of having passed away he was entirely well, and is to-day as bright and happy as a child could possibly be. His recovery was slow, because there was so much to overcome, as the people of the town where we lived, and also my husband's relatives, were very antagonistic toward Christian Science. After he began to improve the doctors said if he did recover it would be a miracle, but the disease would leave him with some affliction,—that he would never have his right mind again. To-day, however, he is a normal child in every respect and a little Christian Science boy, too.
This is only one of the many benefits for which we have reason to be thankful to Christian Science. We are truly grateful to Mrs. Eddy for his great truth, through which our little one was restored to perfect health.—Mrs. Lillie Hoodmaker, Sacramento, Cal.
