For over fifteen years I suffered nearly all the time, and spend hundreds of dollars in trying to get cured. I had what the doctors called dyspepsia, and various other troubles of the stomach. I was treated by an eminent physician in New York and followed his advice for nearly a year, but steadily grew worse. Then I went back to one of our local physicians, who had me examined by the X-ray, and who concluded there was an unnatural growth in the stomach. The treatment for this was so severe that I had to give it up. He told me that there was nothing more he could do except to recommend an operation. I wanted to live, on account of my family, and decided to leave nothing untried, so I engaged three of the best surgeons in the city, and after they had treated me about a month they took me to a hospital and performed the operation. They found nothing wrong with my stomach, but said the liver was badly out of order, and the gall-bladder greatly enlarged. I lay between life and death for several days, after having been on the operating table about three hours.

In about a week I began to get a little better, and in about two months I went back to the shop where I was a foreman. Not having gained much strength, I did very little work, but to my dismay, in a short time my troubles all come back, and I was just as bad as before. I was completely discouraged, and was positive that my time on earth was nearly closed. I did not want to live and suffer any longer. About that time I received some clippings from a good woman in Vermont, which she had taken from the Sentineland other Christian Science literature. I did not think I could be curved, but I decided to try treatment as they did not give any medicine. My joy knew no bounds when I found at the end of three weeks' treatment that I was completely healed. I realized something of what came to the woman who touched the hem of Christ's garment and was made whole after many years of suffering. I was healed nearly five years ago and have lost only one day on account of sickness in that time. I have gained in weight from about one hundred and forty to two hundred and four pounds. The spiritual uplifting that came to me was nearly as wonderful as the healing of my physical troubles. It is impossible for me to find words to express my gratitude for Christian Science. It has brought me and my family into the light of Truth which makes us free. We think that the best way to prove our gratitude is to strive daily to have in us that mind which was also in Christ Jesus, as our beloved Leader has taught us.
