"Healed by reading Science and Health"

IN preparing the contents of this issue of the Sentinel we have been especially impressed by the testimony of several persons who were healed solely through the study of our text-book, and while many such testimonies have been published heretofore, we recall none that has impressed us more profoundly than that of Edith Lamar Burch, which will be found on page 766. In conclusion she writes, "I had all the symptoms [of consumption], and they are every one gone through the reading of 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures' by Mrs. Eddy." The history of this text-book has been that of a healing and regenerating agency, and the constant accumulation of such testimony as that referred to is proof that the works which our Master performed are still going on in his name, and in accord with his promises.

The question is sometimes asked by Christian Scientists, "What shall I give my patients to read?" or again, "What shall I recommend to a sick friend who knows nothing of Christian Science and asks for some reading matter on the subject?" In view of such evidence of healing through the study of Science and Health as has been presented by thousands of witnesses, it would seem that these questions are unnecessary, and that the most natural thing in the world would be for Christian Scientists to place this book in the hands of every inquirer. We willingly undertake considerable labor and expense in the distribution of our periodicals, and such other printed matter as will introduce the subject of Christian Science to our friends and the public in general, yet none of these have established the record made by Science and Health in healing the sick and in awakening the sinful to purity and righteousness. Would it not therefore be well for us to give greater attention to a still wider circulation of our text-book?

There existed at one time a very prevalent belief that Science and Health was hard to understand, and notwithstanding their own experience to the contrary many fell into this false belief and tried to find some easier method of presenting Christian Science to their friends, but they are fast coming to see that this is impossible. The fact that thousands of persons have been healed or reformed through their first reading of this book, is the best evidence that it is the most efficient exponent of our faith, and that it is, beyond all other, the most valuable literature for both adherent and inquirer. The simple and learned alike are being healed by it.
