The noblest possession of the English people is the English Bible—the book that has exercised an incalculable influence over the conduct of the nation. Nevertheless, it would be impossible to pretend that this influence has not been limited by the dogmas in which Christendom has swalthed itself since the invasion of Constantine. First, the power of healing was set aside as supernatural. Then the teaching of the Sermon on the Mount was relegated to the domain of beautiful but unattainable transcendentalism. And, finally, science was declared irreconcilable with revelation.

It was to a world of such failing ideals that Science and Health, the text-book of Christian Science, was given. The Christian Scientists have gained some knowledge of this Science of Christianity, this full, exact knowledge of God as the text of the Bible describes it, they owe to the study of Science and Health. It is their commentary on the Bible. For the knowledge they have gained from it they give the honor and glory to God, and to His servant who wrote it shall they not give their thanks?
