It was early in 1900 when I took up the study of Christian Science, it having been brought to my notice by the healing of my sister, who was in the last stages of consumption. The deep gratitude expressed through the testimonies in the Sentinel first appealed to me, for I was hungry, and this led me to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, that I might learn of that which had given cause for such grateful hearts. I soon found myself joining in that song of joy and thankfulness, for in the above-named book I found the truth for which I had many years longed and looked, and the proof was made manifest to me in the removal of sadness and depression which had become almost unbearable. I came to know that to be a present fact, which before I had looked upon only as a future possibility,—that God's will can be done on earth as in heaven. For this spiritual uplifting I can never cease to be grateful to our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, who through the power of God has labored unselfishly to make plain to the world this healing and saving truth. The result of this uplifting through the study of the Bible and Science and Health was also made manifest in physical healing: weakness was overcome by strength, pain replaced by harmony, and disease destroyed.
Very shortly after buying Science and Health my faith and understanding were tested, for I became ill with quinsy, which I had had several times, and each time had been under medical treatment for at least a fortnight. This time I turned to Christian Science, with the result that next morning my throat was perfectly clear, whereas the day before I could scarcely speak, and I gratefully say I have had no return of the disease. Other diseases have vanished as darkness before the light, such as influenza, indigestion, chronic headache, defective eyesight, chapped hands, as well as other troubles and difficulties which arise in human experience.
I wish to express my loving thanks for our periodicals, the Sentinel, Journal, and Quarterly, for all are lights by the way, enabling us to "magnify the Lord" for his goodness."—Lucy Hammond, Bedford, England.
