Seventeen years have passed since I first heard of Christian Science
Seventeen years have passed since I first heard of Christian Science. At once it appealed to me as the means by which the sufferings of others could be alleviated. Later. its explanation of man's creation and the miracles of Jesus gave it an immeasurable value, as the orthodox teachings on these subjects had never satisfied me. I had united with a church, in which membership was retained until I came into Christian Science. That church is still fondle remembered as having been the avenue through which much love and kindness came into my life when a young girl comparatively alone.
Just as a course of instruction which promised to be of great value in my chosen life-work (grade teaching) was completed, an abnormal growth in an internal organ became very annoying. At different times and place ten. eminent physicians were consulted. Each arrived at exactly the same conclusion. The last one advised me to discontinue the use of medicine: to forget self as nearly as possible: to continue to teach until compelled to give it up; and to travel as much as possible. He then said, "When life is despaired of we will act; you have but one chance in a thousand. At most it can only be a very few years." Teaching was continued for three years, then followed a year and a half of forced inactivity, and the discovery that membrances, growing from the corners of each eye. were soon going to meet on the pupil. An oculist was consulted. Immediate treatment or total blindness was the verdict. Treatment was commenced but soon discontinued, as the sight seemed to grow worse.
About a year later Christian Science treatment was received, which resulted in the sudden vanishing of all foreign growths, together with a very annoying cough and other unnatural conditions; and active work was resumed. In the intervening years God has never failed to sustain me. through His word contained in the Bible and made so beautifully plain through our Leader's teachings.
