Christian Science was first brought to us in the summer...
Christian Science was first brought to us in the summer of 1897, but everything then seemed so lovely to me that I did not accept it, though I would listen when my dear father read from Science and Health. I was never sick, and that time had nothing to trouble me, though in a few weeks I was a young mother, and five days after this my beloved husband was shot and killed instantly. I was then in deep mental darkness and grief: my brightest hopes were crushed: every one that heard it expected I would die, but I was ready to turn to Christian Science. and in my darkest hours I felt the peace that passeth understanding. My dear father applied his understanding of the truth at the time when I broke down with sorrow, and I was soon able to rise above it. For a long time. however, I could not bear to hear my husband's name spoken, but as soon as I could be up my father took me and my baby to his home, and there we would read Science and Health and the dear ones would console me in every way they could. I soon began reading the Bible and Science and Health together, and I can never forget those heavenly hours. though they came through bitter mortal tears. My heart cries out to God to bless Mrs. Eddy for following Him so closely that we could receive such blessing, through her work.
A few months later my little babe was covered with sores called eczema. I began applying Christian Science, but my fear kept me in a half-way attitude for some time. I was visiting relatives who would urge me to use material remedies, but all the time I was dissatisfied and wanted to be alone with God. After a little I wrote to a practitioner, and in about three months the dear child was perfectly healed. No one but those who have had experience with such a stubborn disease can imagine how thankful I was to see my little one's face healed. The travail of the new birth had begun, and Jesus said, "Ye shall be sorrow shall be turned into joy." I can thankfully and truly say that my sorrow was turned into joy Through watching and working in the truth I have had many beautiful demonstrations. Christian Science becomes more hallowed to me after each trial. I love these words from our text-book. "The sinless joy. the perfect harmony and immortality of Life . . . without a single bodily pleasure or pain.—constitute the only veritable. indestructible man. whose being is spiritual" (Science and Health p.76).
