One of the most delightful and sacred memories I hold...
One of the most delightful and sacred memories I hold of my experiences in Christian Science, and of its Discoverer and Founder, Rev. Mary Baker G. Eddy, is of her healing me of acute and severe diphtheria about 1881. I had once before been very ill with this malady, and was treated by a famous physician, some years previous to my knowing anything of Christian Science. This last attack was worse than the former. My neck was swollen badly, I could not swallow, had not eaten for twenty-four hours, had chills and fever, no sleep, and was unable to rise from my bed. On this particular Sabbath afternoon, our Pastor Emeritus, Mrs. Eddy, called, and at once came into my room. How shall I describe it all! She seemed to float lightly and fearlessly to my bedside, calmly uplifted in demeanor, spiritually confident, unaffected, no professional airs,—just sweet, quiet, and soothingly graceful. To my joy she sat upon my bedside and kissed me. In a few minutes she told me I was healed. But what had come over me? The fever was gone, I felt perfectly natural,—no soreness of throat, all swelling had disappeared: I was hungry, and was chatting and laughing. I was free, and what a glorious, exalted freedom. Nature was again beautiful; divine Love had triumphed through His truth, as revealed and applied in Christian Science by our beloved Leader and Teacher, Mrs. Eddy, whose noble and unselfish example is a divine inspiration to all who are seeking and following after God's way,—in Spirit and Truth. I also wish to say that she did this without money and without price. At that time she was preaching Sundays without a salary; I state this because the money thought has been brought to the fore so often. I would also add that I have never had any recurrence of throat trouble since then; for all of which blessings I am most deeply grateful to God, and to our beloved Leader, Rev. Mary Baker G. Eddy.
MRS. CLARA ELIZABETH CHOATE, BOSTON, Mass.
[The above testimony comes from one of my early students, who has had much practice, who has learned by experience, who has done much good.—MARY BAKER EDDY.]
