Three years ago, when on the verge of nervous prostration,...
Three years ago, when on the verge of nervous prostration, with four young children and tied down by lack of means, I turned despairingly to Christian Science. I wrote to a dear friend whom I had not seen for about twelve years, but of whose work in Science I had heard, and said, "If there is anything in Christian Science, help me!" Help came quickly, and in a day or two I was doing my own work, and surrounded, it seemed to me, by a wonderful sense of peace. I felt God's presence very near. Realizing that I had received much, and that there was something I needed, both for myself and my children, I had a long mental struggle, for I knew that the time had come to take a stand, and in accepting this truth old ties and beliefs must be left behind. In the help that was lovingly given me, I was perfectly healed of all the ailments which had seemed so real. I never had another attack, and they had been very severe. I have had good health ever since. My children love Christian Science and we have had many beautiful and happy demonstrations of God's ever-presence and healing power.
During sixteen years of married life we have been held down by the fear that a carpenter is likely to have only four or five months' work in the year, which, with a young family, meant serious lack of means. The winter before last seemed very hard indeed, and when spring opened there was very little promise of any building for the summer months, but by holding fast to the promise that "Divine Love always has met, and always will meet, every human need" (Science and Health, p. 494), and knowing that there is work for every one of God's children, the demonstration was made and my dear husband had work all summer, fall, and winter, and is now engaged for months to come.
Soon after coming into Science I felt more than ever the need of a settled home for our little ones, and felt very sure that Truth could and would help us to obtain it, and the same dear friend who first helped me sent me some cheering words. In the Lesson-Sermon at that time I found this command of Christ Jesus, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Thus was I bidden to look away from the material into the spiritual, and I strove to obey. For eighteen months after taking up this problem there seemed such a sense of lack that all mention of a home was dropped. A few weeks after the demonstration over lack of work was made, the thought of a home was again taken up, and this time by my husband. Led by the "one Mind, which made and governs man and the universe" (Science and Health, p. 539), he found some desirable lots at a low figure. In a short time these were purchased, a loan obtained, and a comfortable house built.
