Christian Science does not teach that neither darkness, nor sickness, nor sin, nor sorrow exist in the material sense of things. It agrees that these are about all that are represented by it, including mortal man expressing the carnal mind. But these are not the spiritual realities which Christian Scientists are striving for, and they learn by degrees that they can be put aside for the things of God.

Can our critic mean that the casting out of sin, sickness, and all untoward conditions afflicting mankind, after the manner of Christ Jesus, our Exemplar, is "expurgating common sense"? This Jesus did, and all Christians must agree that he came to destroy the works of the devil, not the realities of God and His creation, and his promise was, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do."
