We are told that "Christian Science is out of harmony with orthodox teaching, with the Church, and with the Scriptures, for it admits of only one power in the world." So far as the orthodox church and its teaching on this point go, Christian Science admits the charge, but not as to the Scripture, for the latter states positively the omnipotence or unlimited power of God. If Christians actually believe this in their hearts, there cannot possibly be another real power, and if not in reality, there could be no more power than that given a ghost story or the "bear in the dark room" of our childhood days. Christian Scientists believe that the first commandment means just what it says, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me," and to acknowledge any other power, even in thought, is as much a breach of the command as to bow down to mammon. They realize that the very first sin that came to the world was the belief of a power apart from God, and for this sin and its progeny mankind is daily paying the penalty in suffering and sorrow, and will continue to do so until they come to the realization of God as the only power; then there will be no desire to sin, hence no sin.
