In the latter part of January, 1905, after retiring about...

In the latter part of January, 1905, after retiring about 10 p.m., I woke up one night with a dull pain. I began realizing the truth and dozed away to sleep again. A little before daylight I became wide awake; the pain and soreness had increased and spread, and it took but a few moments for me to feel that I had well-developed symptoms of appendicitis. All the symptoms and indications were pronounced and familiar, as I had been engaged in the practice of medicine for thirty-four years. I knew this disease before I knew anything of divine Metaphysics, and I realized fully that it required good work to check and control it.

There seemed to be a little doubt as to the sufficiency of my own understanding, but I went to work in Christian Science as I had never done before, and for the next three days I did the hardest mental work I ever did in my existence. During the evening and early part of the night of the third day the pain became very annoying, but towards daylight of the fourth day I felt that I was getting the best of it, and by evening of that day most of the pain and soreness had disappeared. Three days after, nearly every trace of the disorder had vanished, and I felt well.

I would state here that owing to a great misfortune to my eyes—sunstroke—some eighteen years ago, I have as yet been able to read only with the aid of a very powerful magnifier. I have been able to spell out small portions of Science and Health,—one or two pages a day,—and with the very moderate understanding and knowledge thus gained, I have, all by myself, gained a victory which makes me feel very happy. My sight is improving slowly but surely.
