For thirty-five years I was a sufferer from nasal catarrh,...
For thirty-five years I was a sufferer from nasal catarrh, caused by taking calomel during a siege of diphtheria when about six years of age. This finally developed into severe throat and lung trouble, and an abscess formed in the side of my face, which caused intense suffering. Ten of the best local physicians were employed at different times, each one prescribing many different remedies and honestly doing his best, as I am sure. In the fall of 1897, after having been treated by a specialist every other day for fifteen months, I was told by him that medical skill had done all it could do, and that nothing could hinder my going to a slow death by consumption, as my throat and lungs were in such a bad condition. He also said my breathing was so imperfect that nothing could do me any permanent good.
My mental and physical condition was indescribable when a friend of my family, from Elgin, Ill., visited us. She had just been healed from rheumatism in its worst form, and said it had been done through Christian Science, and to please my wife and daughter, as I then thought, I went to Elgin to see a practitioner. I took one present treatment, and went into Chicago the next morning to attend the dedication of First Church. This was my first Christian Science service, and from that time I have never missed attendance at one of our meetings, either Sunday or Wednesday, except when I have been out of their reach, nor have I failed to study carefully the current Lesson-Sermon each week. I owe much, and I might say nearly all, of my progress to this persistent study, also attendance at our meetings, and I cannot recommend too highly such an effort to any one who is trying to work out his problem in Christian Science.
I took six weeks absent treatment after the one above mentioned. My healing seemed slow, but I began at once to breathe more freely and my cough ceased. For several years I worked on, gaining little by little an understanding of the truth that finally made me free, and to say I am well but feebly expresses it. Nothing could tempt me to give up this great truth which has come into my life, and much as I value my physical healing, I value the spiritual regeneration most of all. I am trying to show my gratitude to God, and to our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, by helping others.
