One evening, wishing to reach a small package on a high shelf in my schoolroom, I stepped upon a chair, thinking it to be perfectly secure. I raised my arms to grasp the article, and as I did so the chair lurched, and I fell very heavily upon it. When I regained consciousness I was lying on the floor. I attempted to rise, but the excruciating pains, as if many knives were jagging and tearing the left lung, made it seem impossible, and I settled back on the floor, declaring the supremacy of Truth and Love. After the lapse of three or four minutes I heard approaching foot-steps. Not wanting the curiosity or sympathy of mortal mind to center itself upon me, I made a second attempt to rise, and was successful. I conversed a few moments with the one who had entered the room, then started to the car which would convey me to my home. The motion of the car was almost unendurable, as it seemed to increase the pain which was shooting through the lungs, stomach, and head. I declared the truth and studied Science and Health far into the night. The following morning nausea, a cough, and the raising of phlegm put in their appearance. I felt that I must remain at home, but a sweet line taught me in childhood—"There is no safer place than the place of duty"—inspired me. I went to my schoolroom and attended to all its demands. Upon the evening of the second day a sense of disappointment and fear was rapidly gaining a hold. The soreness and pain had not only not left me, but seemed more severe. I worked for some time, the difficulty in breathing seemed to increase, but I rested upon the truth that I lived in Mind, and that error could not prevent me from helping myself.

At last a calmness came upon me; fear subsided, and the discordant conditions began to disappear. Before the dawn of the following morning the nausea had entirely gone and I enjoyed a comfortable sleep. During the day the phlegm and cough disappeared; I could breathe without difficulty, the soreness in head and pain in the ear, as of an ulcerated tooth, disappeared suddenly, after giving one vicious throb. The complete healing required about two weeks, the accident occurring the second week prior to the Christmas vacation. So wonderfully did Truth protect me, that no physical discomfort, no discoloration, no depression in spirits was in evidence to others. The overcoming of this sense of accident verified to me, absolutely, the truth of Job's words, "I know that my redeemer liveth" and that "in my flesh shall I see God." The spiritual uplifting which came through this demonstration was my Christmas joy. Lurking errors that I had thought destroyed were uncovered, and, I trust, overcome.

I am thankful to God for Mrs. Eddy's spiritualized consciousness and life; for Christian Science; and I am thankful to Christian Science for my new sense of God, as it showed me how to get to Him.
