After fifty-five years of suffering, which a devoted mother,...
After fifty-five years of suffering, which a devoted mother, kindest friends, and learned and conscientious physicians could not alleviate; after being forty years a member of an orthodox church, and after having the prayers of loving pastors, I could find no relief from hopeless suffering. At thirty years of age, without a home, and too helpless a burden to inflict upon friends, I sought admittance to a hospital, but was refused, as an incurable might not enter it. Even then loving hands were extended, and loving care given that would gladly have shared the pain if it had been possible.
Five years ago, Christian Science came with healing in its wings, teaching me to know that heaven is within us; to understand that Truth wipes out suffering as though it had never been, clearing the way for a purer faith and trust in divine Love. To explain this I will mention that some of the miseries which have been erased, like chalk-marks from a blackboard, were congestion of the brain and spinal cord of fifty-five years' standing, blood-poisoning of five years, inflammatory rheumatism, paralysis of two years' duration, etc., together with sorrow and poverty.
Is it strange that the old thoughts of bondage, held for half a century, are gladly given up, to be replaced by the new and beautiful ones brought to us in the study of Christian Science, where we learn to know, not to believe; to practise, not to theorize; to prepare to live, not to die? And the most beautiful thought is, that this truth is free for all to understand.—C. E. Cushman McCarthy, Berkeley, Cal.
