I write to tell of the overcoming of physical ailments...
I write to tell of the overcoming of physical ailments by the power of the Word, as revealed and applied in Christian Science. I had for years known something of this Science, and had known personally of the healing of many diseases, and yet, when disease came upon me which was considered incurable in materia medica, I was filled with fear. I would have gone at once to another town for help, as there were no Scientists where I was then living, but the tempting suggestion came,—Christian Science can heal you, but your case is serious, and many months and perhaps years may pass before the error can be fully met, and the rainy-day supply will have been long exhausted. So I kept my little earthly all. The pain and fear were great for a few weeks, when there came an entire willingness to sacrifice all that material sense held to be of value. I then went for treatment and was healed. The pain and the great conscious fear were gone, and in their place was a clearer thought—a sense of greater freedom—than was ever before realized. This enabled me, the following day, to speak audibly the Word of Truth to one who was suffering in much the same way as I had been, and again the error was met, this time by the power of the spoken Word alone. At first there was a fear that it might not be acceptably received, then I awoke and knew my duty, and Christian Science was given all the glory.
To have a single fear removed is cause for much gratitude. Then when I think what my life would be were the little understanding of Christian Science which I have, and the privilege of gaining more, taken away from me, I realize something of the debt of gratitude I owe to her whose life-long obedience to her highest sense of right has given to this age an understanding of the truth by which the Master overcame sin, disease, and death, and which, in the very grandeur of its simplicity, even the little ones may know and demonstrate.
