As far back as I can remember, I have suffered from terrible headaches,--inherited, so the doctor said, my grandmother and mother having suffered before me. I tried many physicians during the past twenty-one years, and all, without a single exception, gave me morphine and atrophine hypodermically. I was opposed to these drugs and would suffer untold agony before I would take them. I seldom went over three weeks without having a headache; and have lain for six days without eating or swallowing anything except an occasional sip of water.
My health grew worse, and I suffered more and more; for now it was not only my head but my heart and spine. The last six months of this existence (I cannot call it life) I was in bed most of the time, and took a strychnine tonic so strong that the pharmacist who filled the last prescription said one dose would kill a man; I took three doses a day. This was my condition in October, 1903, when heart-failure set in. I had three attacks, and sent for a Christian Scientist. I began taking treatment the 31st of October, and the 4th of November I was able to be up.
More than a year previous, while on a visit to a loved one who was taking Christian Science treatment, I had read Science and Health to her and was struck with beauty and purity of Mrs. Eddy's teaching. Though I did not doubt the truth of her statements, I thought it was not for me. I had been trying to live a Christian life for thirty years and through all my suffering I knew that God is Love, and trusted Him. Though I thought my afflictions were sent by Him, yet I did not doubt His wisdom, and would rather have died than to have lost faith in God.
