When I first heard of Christian Science I was in great...
When I first heard of Christian Science I was in great need of physical healing, but I rejected the idea that it could cure me, and asked the Scientist who had ventured to speak of it to me. "What do you believe about God?" In her answer were the words "divine Principle, Life;" and I said that I believed it was the religion for which I had been searching so long. She loaned me her copy of Science and Health, by Mrs. Eddy, that night, and I sat up until morning. reading it, for the first page convinced me that it was the truth. It was many years before I saw that woman again, and could thank her for telling me of Christian Science, for I immediately returned to my home in a distant city, where I procured a copy of Science and Health from the library, and read it constantly for about two weeks, without once thinking of my physical condition, so happy was I that my long hunger and thirst for a true knowledge of God and man was being satisfied.
One day when I had tried to walk a little down town, I had returned depressed and suffering, and was lying down in a despairing frame of mind. I turned and saw Science and Health on the bed beside me. where I had been reading it before going out, and the thought came to me like a flash, "You have accepted this as your religion, why do you not let it heal you?" I knew nothing at the time of churches or of practitioners, but I stopped all my medicines and put aside the many false beliefs I had accumulated through three surgical operations. rest-cure, massage, and other so-called remedies. I then went to work again, reading Science and Health with the desire for healing, and I received it immediately. The morning of the third day I realized that I was perfectly well and found I could go everywhere with strength and freedom.
I then sought the church, and soon received class teaching. This occurred eight years ago. and while my experiences have been varied, and many times I have been far away from Christian Scientists, I have been learning the lessons most needed for my individual unfoldment into spiritual sense. My understanding that Christian Science is the Word of God to this age has grown into a loving reverence for this revelation, which is at once most practical and most transcendental. My gratitude to its Discoverer and Founder, Mrs. Eddy. comes next to my gratitude to God.—Bessie Leonard Young, New York, N. Y.
