To make the final payments to the Panama Canal Company and the Republic of Panama it is probable that another call on the banks for about $20,000,000 will have to made. Secretary Shaw already has withdrawn $30,000,000 to meet the payments of $50,000,000 and has about $56,000,000 in the Treasury that is available. To take $20,000,000 out of that sum would leave a balance smaller than is considered prudent, as it is the opinion of the Treasury officials that the balance should never be allowed to fall below $50,000,000.

After a conference between Ambassador Porter and W. A. Day and Charles W. Russell, representing the United States Government at Paris in the transfer of the Panama Canal property, it has been arranged that the signing of the contract shall take place at the United States Embassy. The date of the signing will probably be about April 25, following the ratification of the agreement by the stockholders of the company.

The members of the United States Canal Commission received an enthusiastic welcome on their arrival at Panama last week. They were met at the railroad station by a number of special commissioners representing the Government of the Republic. At the palace the meeting between President Amador and the Canal Commissioners was most cordial.
