Truth and Truthfulness in Christian Science

A Christian Scientist having had an unexpected question suddenly put to her, paused an instant to reflect before answering. The questioner laughed mischievously and said, "I thought you would do that; all the Christian Scientists I have talked with do it—don't you ever answer questions 'pat'?"

"If they are stock questions, such as people generally ask," responded the Christian Scientist, "the answer is usually ready, but one cannot be too careful in answering a question like yours that is ambiguous and might be answered in a variety of ways according to its context. Such questions have sometimes been answered rather too freely by Christian Scientists, and their replies have been used as weapons against them; that is why I am careful in my answers, that I may voice the truth as clearly as it may be given me to understand it."

"What do you mean by truth?"
