From our Exchanges

Spenser B. Meeser, D.D., says in The Standard:

"The profound conviction of the deep of a quickened spiritual life in the Christian churches is everywhere in evidence.... For several years past men have been saying that we were on the eve of a great revival. Many have been looking for it to come down from heaven as a mystery, or up from the earth as an organized effort. When it comes it will come without observation and be found in our hearts. ... Many of the churches are in reality desiring it intensely, and are agitated concerning it. Everywhere men feel that the modern materialistic interpretations of life have been as stones in the mouth of a hungry soul. Many varieties of religion and philosophy that appealed to the sense of the spiritual have had a wide hearing. The emptiness of formulæ, however old in religion or new in science, is attested by thousands; and everywhere there seems to be an atmosphere of expectation of a Coming One.

"Of course the final issue of any religion, or religious movement, is the saving of men from sin unto God; but I mean that toward that end the best thing and the thing God intends may involve what most mightily touches the hearts and lives of the Christian people themselves in the Christian churches. This is not prophecy; it is simply thinking the alternatives that may be in the eternal purpose of God, and bidding all to be open-minded, ready and receptive to whatever God may send, and not predetermine what it must be to have our sympathy, or fail to appreciate the wider needs of the church which God may see.
