Immeasurable peace and blessedness have come into my...
Immeasurable peace and blessedness have come into my life since Science and Health was put into my hands some twelve years ago. I did not need it for the physical healing, though I have since had numberless proofs of the preventive and curative power of Christian Science; but it seemed too good to be true that in this little volume was offered us absolute, practical Truth,—not guesswork or vague theories. My father was an infidel, and from him I had learned to be very critical, to take nothing for granted but to dare to investigate any statement, no matter how hoary with age and respectability. He read the "little book" but said that Christian Science was but adding one more to the myriad sects already in the world, and that all of truth never would or could be contained in one book, or be written by one person. My heart sank, —I had so longed to have his reason confirm my hope; but as my heart and head insisted that Science and Health surely did reveal the whole Truth, even though I could not yet perceive it, I tacitly accepted the challenge, and for years looked into every phase of mortal belief,—theosophy, spiritualism, the many shades of mental science, and other vagaries of human thought. I was seemingly darker and more mystified all the time, yet the error was destroying itself, and in time, after much assistance from my teacher in Christian Science, and through the privilege of living in the home of another Christian Scientist whose daily "line upon line" of Scientific counsel was invaluable to me, out into the clearing of God's own Truth I came, inexpressibly thankful to Mrs. Eddy for having given us the "Key to the Scriptures" whereby we may learn to follow the Truth that not only frees us, but enables us to help others.
Here I would express my earnest thanks to the many loyal workers who have consciously or unconsciously reflected the Light to me. How often at the testimony meetings I have heard the word that I most needed! To those who cannot yet make their demonstration to speak in these meetings, I would say with Longfellow, "Give what you have; to some it may be better than you dare to think."—Frances E. Baker, Milwaukee, Wis.
