An Explanation

Wilmington (Del.) Journal

To the Editor.

Sir:—It appears that our editorial friend is still perplexed over what seems to him an inconsistency in the lives of Christian Scientists; viz., That while they exalt Mind and belittle matter, they continue to eat and wear clothing, shoes, etc. And no doubt he may entertain the same view which we once held, that because Jesus ate and wore clothes there was something impractical in these words, "It is the Spirit [Mind] that quickeneth, the flesh profiteth nothing;" also that he demanded: "Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on."

It is certain that Christian Scientists do eat and drink, indeed, with more comfort, many of them, than when they were tormented with the pangs of dyspepsia, indigestion, and gastritis, and governed by countless contradictory, hygienic laws. And they wear shoes, better shoes, many of them, than when sickness, discouragement, and dissipation prevented their activity in such labors as would make them worthy of their hire. And they have better ability to assist in the feeding and clothing of others than before they were acquainted with the beneficial effects of Christian Science.
