The Power of the West

We herewith publish extracts from a very interesting letter written from Omaha, Nebraska, to the Boston Herald by a special correspondent.

Omaha, Neb., February 14, 1900.

In an article which appeared in the Herald Monday, January 22, a summary of the political conditions was given, as they exist in the central western states, comprising Iowa, Nebraska, North and South Dakota, Colorado, Kansas, Wyoming, and Missouri. That article embodied conclusions based on a careful survey of the situation. It commented only in a general way on the causes for which the western people are at variance on some points with the people of the East. It will be the province of the present letter to particularize on commercial and industrial affairs, with a view of showing, in as brief form as possible, the wonderful development which has occurred in the central West, and the effect of this enlargement of people and business interests upon the political beliefs of these western people.
