Physical and Moral Benefits
In August, 1896, I was afflicted with a cough accompanied by the raising of large quantities of mucus. My lungs were congested to such an extent that I seemed to breathe in the top of them only. Added to this was a violent headache, diarrhœa, and copious night-sweating. I became greatly weakened, losing about twenty pounds in weight in two weeks time. I went home and placed myself under Christian Science treatment. The headache and bowel trouble were conquered the first day. The other troubles were overcome one by one, the shortness of breath being the last one to disappear. It was about three weeks before I took up my regular work again. I was in charge of construction work for the New York and Pennsylvania Telephone Co. The first week out I gained seven pounds in weight, and improved steadily until I was heavier by about six pounds than I had been for several years.
I had been a user of tobacco for more than twenty-five years. I was a temperate drinker of liquor; taking a drink when I felt like it, but cannot say there was any habit formed. I had left off the use of tobacco at different times, but always returned to it. In fact was not wholly free from the desire for it at any time. Since being healed by Christian Science I have not had the least desire for tobacco or liquor in any form.
While all these things were great helps to me, and to Christian Science is due the credit for the knowledge of God that made them possible, the greatest blessing received by me at that time was the moral uplift. Before that time I had seen the work in my own family. I knew there was healing power there that I could not understand, still I quibbled and argued about the words and terms that Scientists used, not understanding them. My thought was cleared up. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" read differently. It was all new to me. Since my healing I have not taken medicine nor applied material remedies in any form. I thank God every day of my life that a knowledge of Christian Science has come to me. I am doing my best to follow the teachings of the Great Master and to bring my life into harmony with God (Good).
