An Interesting Incident

An incident of much interest occurred at our State Prison on Sunday, Dec. 17, when, after the close of the Christian Science services, one of the prisoners stepped out before the others and said,—

"I desire to say a few words to our Christian Science friends from Lincoln. On behalf of the class here assembled it is my privilege to extend to you our sincerest thanks for your untiring efforts in breaking the bread of Life—the Truth—to us; and in doing so you are making us free indeed; for our Master said, 'Ye shall know the Truth, and the Truth shall make you free.'

"Friends, as a small token of our esteem, allow me to present each of you with a broom—a symbol of cleanliness. May your efforts at cleansing our consciousness from erring thoughts be crowned with success; and may you sweep from our minds all clouds and anxious doubts, so that we may be able to hear the whisper of the 'still, small voice' saying to each and every one of us 'God is Love.' I beg you to accept this, our love-offering, in the sense our Master accepted the widow's mite; for, as she gave all she had, so we are giving all we have. Through the magnanimity of brother D. whose loving hands made these brooms each day after his daily task due to the state was performed, we are enabled to offer this small token of our esteem; and let me assure you that the gratitude we owe you for the benefit received, we shall never be able to repay. May God bless and reward you."
