Saved from the Operating Table
Two years ago I was in the depths of misery and woe, both mental and physical. After six months in bed the physicians said the disease was organic and incurable, and only an immediate operation could help me. Delay would be dangerous. Just before this blow, trouble came in full force, and I felt that life was ended as far as happiness was concerned. I did not realize that just a few steps beyond were beautiful "green pastures," and "bright skies" where "darkest clouds" had been.
Fortunately I had a dear friend, a Christian Scientist, living in another city. I wrote asking her if there was any hope. She replied, "You can be perfectly healed without an operation." I asked for treatment, desiring only the physical healing. Shortly after, my friend came to the city where I was living, and at my request took me home with her. I was borne to a carriage, a bed was made up in the train, and I was taken to my room on arriving at the destination. The improvement was immediate, and wonderful to those at home knowing of the case. In two days I left the bed and was soon moving about.
My case, however, was what might be called slow healing, and for the benefit of the dear ones similarly situated I would say, there were months of waiting, and many days of discouragement. I am glad to say I soon realized that Christian Science is the Truth and the only way. I clung to this faithfully, and was obedient to the healer in every respect. During this time of waiting the Journal was doing a great work for me. "Miscellaneous Writings," which has since been such a wonderful help, was not published then. There were many old Journals in the house. I used to read them constantly, searching each one for words from Mrs. Eddy, and rejoicing when I found an article of length from her pen. I was brought to Buffalo in October, and the following February, I went for the first time to First Church of Christ, Scientist, and I have attended nearly every service since, missing, I think, only two.
