A Word in Favor of Christian Science
News-Press
Editor News-Press:—So much has been said of Christian Science of late that I take this method of saying a word in its favor. I had been a sufferer from constipation for twenty-five years, during which time I tried about every kind of medicine, prescribed for me by some of the foremost physicians in this city and New York, and also proprietary remedies. While I must say that some of these did not lose their efficacy as quickly as others, still the result was always the same, viz.: substituting a new remedy for the old. Some years ago I went abroad, feeling sure that the voyage, change of air, and mode of living would bring about the desired result; but in this I was mistaken. I again had to call on physicians, and after several months returned home, a disappointed woman.
Less than a year ago I attended a lecture delivered at Vassar Institute, in which much was said against Christian Science. My next step was to learn what the other side had to say; for, as we know, there are always two sides to a story. I attended some of the Wednesday evening meetings of the Christian Scientists, and found among the people I met there some of our best citizens. Their teachings were so different from what I had been led to believe, that I went again and again, and always found the leaders adhering strictly to the teachings of Jesus, and always admonishing their hearers to love one another, inasmuch as we are all children of one Father. Surely none other than a God-abiding people would teach this.
I am not nor have I ever been a member of any church, but to me there can be no higher concept of the Bible than that taught by Christian Science. These people look upon God as Love, Good, the bearer of all glad tidings, and they therefore go to Him with their sorrows, sickness, and sin, knowing full well that with God all things are, ever were, and always will be, possible. Christian Scientists claim all churches should understand and practise the healing power, and this power certainly should be manifested if the words of Jesus are true. I am not a member of the Christian Science Church, but to people of such indisputably high morals and Christly character I say God-speed.
