Contributions to the amount of five thousand dollars have been received. Miss McClellan has decided to change her original purpose, and will endeavor to secure funds sufficient to purchase for the rear-admiral a home, either in Washington or New York City. Many subscriptions have been made on condition that the fund be used to purchase a home. It is thought that at least twentyfive thousand dollars will be available by July 1.

It is reported at Washington that the Transvaal government has asked the United States to offer its services as a mediating power. The request came through the American consul at Pretoria. No answer has been given by the State Department, and unless Great Britain makes a similar request the President will probably take no action in the matter. There is, however, a disposition on the part of some to urge that under the treaty of The Hague Conference, the United States could extend its mediation without offending Great Britain.
