The Value of Science and Health
There has been so much said lately about the price of Science and Health that I would like to relate a few cases where the book brought health, happiness, and prosperity.
A woman whose husband was sent to the penitentiary was left to support the family — a child, father-in-law, and mother-in-law. She was a timid woman and had never worked away from home, so it seemed hard for her to have to seek work. She applied to a dressmaker who told her she would pay her what she was worth to her, and increase her wages in proportion to her usefulness. With the very first money she earned, Science and Health was boutht, in spite of the counsel of the mother-in-law who thought she ought to buy necessary food. This year she worked in the best dress-making establishment here, and none of the family have lacked what they needed.
She has a little girl, five years old, who has not taken medicine since she was a few months old (when the mother first knew of Science). This is the first child she has had who has lived for any length of time. It has been said that her children were too delicate to be raised, but this one is certainly the picture of health. She has told me that she would not take anything for Science and Health. She has "Miscellaneous Writings," and takes the Journal and Sentinel.
