Christian Science Experience
Evening Call
It is safe to say that in all the churches of this city there was never a more earnest, enthusiastic, and reverential service than that held last night in the Christian Science Church, at No. 1 West Monroe Street. It was the usual Wednesday evening experience meeting, or rather, it was most unusual. There are seats now for nearly one hundred, and the church was almost entirely filled.
The services consisted of reading from the Bible, Psalm 107, the first three pages from the chapter on "Prayer" in the text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker G. Eddy, and appropriate hymns, which were most heartily sung by the entire congregation. The happy, earnest singing of this church has been the subject of most favorable comment, and many passing by stop to listen with pleasure and interest. Christian Scientists do not have a special Thanksgiving service; even the smallest child is daily taught to take every trouble to God in prayer, and the manifold blessings of their religion call for unceasing thanks; but, always uniting in spirit with every child of God in a good purpose, there was caught the tone of the national preparation for Thanksgiving. At the request of the leader, the testimonies began at the first row of seats, and without a break in line, continued to the end of the room. Utterances from childish lips and voices filled with joyful emotion left no room to doubt the sincerity of this religious body of people.
One lady told of being healed of a severe case of astigmatism by reading the text-book, Science and Health. She had worn glasses for a long while, would suffer much from pain and soreness if she attempted to read or sew without them, and the doctor had pronounced her case incurable. She has now entirely discarded glasses, and her eyes are restored to perfect soundness.
